History of Alta
Alta was originally founded around1865 as a place to house miners from the Emma mine, the Flagstaff mine, and other silver mines in Little Cottonwood Canyon. Sensationally rich silver ore in the Emma mine enabled its owners to sell the mine at an inflated price to British investors in 1871. In 1938 Alta Alta is a first-class ski resort, but it started out as one of the wildest mining towns in Utah. Silver was first found in Alta in 1865, but the big discovery in the Emma Mine came in 1868. The town blossomed. By 1872, 3,000 people lived in Alta but the residents never filed for the property. The Walker Brothers of Salt Lake City filed on the entire town. The Walkers then offered to sell the land to the residents for $50 to $250 per lot. Some Alta residents paid and others decided to leave.
In 1873 the value of silver fell and the ore was getting more difficult to bring out of the mountain. in 1874 a disastrous snow slide killed sixty men and started fires that destroyed much of the town. It never recovered completely, though another boom occurred between 1904 and 1920.
In 1937 the Alta United Mines Company gave the U.S. Forest Service surface rights to develop the area for camping and skiing. The new Alta Ski Resort opened for business in November 1938. During World War II mountain paratroopers trained on the ski slopes of Alta.
In the 1960s and 1970s major development turned Alta into one of the best ski resorts in Utah and one of the most popular in America. Today Alta is renowned for its deep powder snow. In some years, total snowfall in Alta exceeds 700 inches.
